Day #3: Samsung Shows Us What We're Missing Out On

Day 3 in Seoul brought our tour bus deep within the glass labyrinth that is Samsung Town, located in Seochu, Seoul, South Korea.

Our destination that afternoon was Samsung d’light, an exhibition space that showcased the latest Samsung products. The name “d’light” fuses the words ‘digital’ and ‘light’ to represent the company’s vision of being a ‘guiding light to the digital world’ by sharing the excitement and delight of digital technology through interaction with its visitors. The ‘d’ is also meant to represent 3 characteristics: ‘Dynamic’, ‘Dream’ and ‘Diversity’.

This was most apparent as we stepped through the massive double doors into the Media Plaza. True to Samsung’s vision, the tour was not just an extended show-and-tell of technological goodies.

Our attention was first brought to a huge digital floor display known as the ‘D’light stage’, where our group mate, Dynn, volunteered himself to try the ‘Augmented Reality’ technology. Essentially, what this technology does is to allow the user to physically interact with digital elements on a separate screen. Think Wii, but far more advanced and way more realistic.

The second level of the exhibition hall housed Samsung’s latest product line-ups such as their latest blu-ray compatible home entertainment systems that offered flawless displays, as well as a little peek into the ‘behind the scenes’ of the manufacturing process.

The tour was wrapped up with a sneak preview of Samsung’s new product concepts. These included an all-in-one credit card, as well as a handheld translation device that was able to identify words on a surface and instantly translate it. Apart from the sharper visuals on the new TV screens, some have already made its way into the product technology of Samsung. Well, I think many of these ideas really have a place in this world and hopefully I will get a chance to see it soon.

Future world technology… We're only beginning to have a taste of what’s to come.
